Hacking defendant’s suicide spurs debate over prosecutorial overreach
The suicide of Internet activist Aaron Swartz has triggered criticism of U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz and prosecutors in her office for their alleged overzealousness in the pursuit of criminal charges against Swartz and for insisting on incarceration as punishment. But former prosecutors who’ve worked with Ortiz and career prosecutor Stephen Heymann contend that neither lawyer carries a reputation for unfairness.
